The two principal elements of the assembly are the container that holds the culture and a foam trap (E) in the vent line.  Both elements are fabricated from a low-extractable polyolefin film which is Cryovac® M312 Medical film.  The fittings in the two elements are proprietary to Coastal BioMarine.

Elements external to the culture container are two, Pall KLEENPAK 0.2 micron gas filters, a sample loop that can be circulated with a peristaltic pump, and a vent line. Internal to the culture container are the diffusers, air lift circulator, and required instrument probes.

At Coastal BioMarine assemblies have been operated with a culture capacity of 100 liters. At this capacity the culture container has a diameter of 10 inches and an overall length of 76 inches.

We use as a supporting vessel a light weight polyester tank. Dimensions: 12 inches diameter, 96 inches high.

The operating experience with this assembly has been with the culture of light-sensitive heterotrophic marine algae.
